    AFRICA ASSOCIATION SUMMIT (AAS3) Theme: Enhancing Partnerships, Growth and Opportunities for Associations in a Post-Pandemic Africa ​ 23 - 24 September 2021 ​ 2021 AFSAE SUMMIT CALLS FOR ENHANCED PARTNERSHIPS FOR AFRICAN ASSOCIATIONS ​ African Association leaders ended the 3rd Africa Association Summit on a high note with a rallying call to enhance partnerships among Associations on the continent as a post-pandemic growth strategy. ​ Addressing the closing session of the Summit, the President of the African Society of Association Executives (AfSAE) Jeffers Miruka expressed satisfaction that the 2021 event had managed to meets its four objectives of; highlighting the contribution of African Associations in the socio-economic development agenda of Africa, showcasing opportunities for African Associations in the newly established African Free Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA), sharing educational and learning material on the latest global trends in Associations management, and facilitating professional connections between African Associations Executives and their international counterparts. A communique issued after the summit identified the following as the key areas that AfSAE will focus on for the next year Create a forum for learning and knowledge sharing about the practice of the association profession in Africa by transforming events to align with relevant global trends specific to Africa, driving dialogue within African Associations and provide an educative program that focuses on impact, providing the platform that enables empowered Associations to celebrate success and leverage on opportunities and Serve as a connecting platform between African and Global Associations. Publicly support and make recommendations on policies relevant to associations in Africa by leading Policy dialogue and mainstream development policies relevant for African associations, leading and or amplifying campaigns for association policy changes when and where necessary, collecting and Collating data, relevant for favourable Association Management practices and expanding our engagement strategies with key stakeholders. Create and build a continent and global-wide network of Association management professionals through expanding on our influence and liaise with regional organizations like the AU / AfCFTA / ECOSOC etc., leveraging on Association Management Industry events and opportunities, providing the opportunity for members and stakeholders to connect to the worldwide community of Associations and not for profit management practitioners and working on strategies for membership engagement and collaboration. ​ Liaise with like-minded organizations to expand on our mutual impact. This will be achieved by enhancing collaboration with peers and like-minded organizations, exploring partnerships opportunities in Africa and abroad with all sectors of society, improving communications and building cooperative alliances with kindred organizations, government and business decision-makers and engaging all sectors of society to collectively advocate on issues that affect Association Management. Ensure effective leadership and management and invest in diverse components required for a sustainable organization by renewing the internal governance structures and embrace innovative techniques to association management, reimagining how we secure resources for the organization, effectively allocating resources to achieve strategic objectives and build the governing capacities of stakeholder groups and members. At the Africa Association Summit (AAS3), eight organizations were feted during the inaugural Associations Advance Africa Awards (AAA), divided into four categories. They included: ​ 1.     Empowering Uganda's Associations: AfSAE Hosts Successful 4-Day Training Workshop in Kampala Empowering Uganda's Associations: AfSAE Hosts Successful 4-Day Training Workshop in Kampala Strategic Collaboration to Create Capacity. In a strategic partnership, the African Society of Association Executives (AfSAE), in collaboration with the Uganda Tourism Board through the Uganda Convention Bureau, hosted the inaugural Uganda Association Management & MICE Training Workshop from 4 to 8 December 2023 at the Protea Hotel by Marriott Kampala Skyz. Drawing together a diverse array of participants, the workshop welcomed over 25 Association Executives from prominent Ugandan associations. Among the participating associations were the Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers (UIPE), Uganda Dental Association (UDA), Uganda Manufacturers Association (UMA), Uganda Hotel Owners Association (UHOA), Uganda Fish Processors and Exporters Association (UFPEA), Uganda Local Government Association (ULGA), Uganda Pharmaceutical Manufacturers Association (UPMA), the Institute of Certified Public Accountants of Uganda (ICPAU), and Uganda Chamber of Commerce and Industry (UCCI), among others. The workshop covered an extensive range of topics to enhance the skills of association leaders. Some key themes included: 1. Essential Practices in Association Management 2. Effective Management of Volunteer Committees & Task Forces 3. Membership Development 4. Communication and Public Relations 5. Developing Your Leadership Potential 6. Understanding the MICE Sector and Business Events 7. Bidding 8. Role of Associations in the MICE Industry 9. Sustainable Revenue Streams for Associations Recognition and Future Initiatives On the final day, Dr. Lilly Ajarova, CEO of the Uganda Tourism Board, presented certificates of participation to the workshop attendees. Expressing gratitude to the associations that participated, she disclosed plans to develop Uganda's associations further through capacity building and challenged the participant to use the knowledge gained to better their associations and improve their management skills through global best practices. Dr. Ajarova emphasised the importance of competitiveness at national, regional, and international levels. While 50 associations were invited, the 50% representation highlighted a commitment to enhancing the capacities of Ugandan associations. The Uganda Association Management & MICE Training Workshop stands as a pivotal initiative, equipping association executives with the tools needed to navigate an ever-evolving landscape. As Uganda positions itself as a hub for business events through associations, the training was crucial in fostering learning, networking and creating collaborations. AfSAE Uganda Chapter At the end of the training, the AfSAE Uganda Chapter was formed to represent the association profession in Uganda. The following interim officials were elected: 1. Chairman: Julius Cesar Kintu - Uganda Institute of Professional Engineers (UIPE) 2. Secretary: Ms. Anitah Kejaji - Uganda Dental Association (UDA) 3.     Eighty-Nine (89) association professionals and nonprofit managers in Rwanda, Kenya and Nigeria successfully completed the certificate course training in association management offered by the African Society of Association Executives (AfSAE). Gathered in Rwanda’s clean capital Kigali, the highly anticipated association training and development workshop was sponsored by the Rwanda Convention Bureau (RCB) and facilitated by AfSAE. The training took place at Ubumwe Grande Hotel. Premised on the veritable platform of AfSAE’s vision of education, advocacy, networking, and as a voice of the association profession in Africa, the 3 days training was the most intense that the society has conducted since it was founded in 2016. Mr. Gregg Talley, CAE, FASAE, President and CEO of Talley Management Group, Inc. and Jeffers Miruka, AfSAE President and CEO of the African Association Management Company (AFAMCO) facilitated the training. The workshop was intertwined with several group discussions and short presentations from participants, all aimed at maximizing learning and promoting networking. Delegates were disallowed from sharing the same tables with similar faces during the training to foster free interactions. The prestigious certificate program in association management course, that leads to a Certified Association Executive (CAE) credential is a product of the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) also known as the Center for Association Leadership. This was made possible through a grant of program license and faculty status agreement between ASAE and AfSAE. The courses covered included; essential practices in association management, effectively managing volunteer committees and task forces, membership development, communication and public relation, and developing your leadership potential. The first course of the program, essential practices in association management was first offered during Meetings Africa 2018 in Johannesburg, South Africa, in June 2018 in Kigali, Rwanda and in February 2019 in Accra Ghana. It’s the intention of AfSAE to spread this training in Africa as it promotes the association management profession in the continent and give voices to associations, equipped the AfSAE president. Frank Murangwa, Director of Destination Marketing at the Rwanda Convention Bureau, while closing the training, said that associations have made his organisation set new targets for revenues earned from hosting business events from $74 million in 2018 to $88 million in 2019. With events such as Transform Africa Summit (TAS) and International Conference on AIDS and STIs in Africa (ICASA 2019) lined up, Rwanda is well positioned to be a force to reckon with as a business events destination in Africa. 1/1
